two for one

robert crumb explains THE BEAN EFFECT

INVISIBLE HANDS (richard sala)

WINTER STEELE

JAPANESE SPIDERMAN

i got in a non-argument with nick a this weekend over whether or not WINSOR MCCAY was also an animator (besides being a cartoonist - which he was really great at) - and i said yes he was, because i remember having to watch that fucking GERTIE THE DINOSAUR video, what seemed like 20 times
so i went on youtube to see what i could dig up, and i forgot about THIS hilaaarious (whether or not it's sposed to be) animation he did,
THE CENTAURS (1921)
(notice the baby at the end looks like bobby hill)

DOG BOY (based on CHARLES BURNS character) for LIQUID TELEVISION (aka amazzzzing television)

watched SUNSHINE... i dunno wasn't too blown away, i guess i was expecting more from it considering 28 days later and trainspotting i've watched a hundred times over each, it wasn't like excrutiatingly awful it just wasn't... good
i also vicariously watched 300, because my dad had it cranked downstairs (yup still here) and it sounded just as cheesy as i thought it would be

although i know this would've come out ages ago, i loved the INCREDIBLES, so this was a spontaneous part of my bday present

he puffs out his chest and EVERYTHING

laura gave me explicit instructions to get comics with her bday money, so i got
THE QUITTER (Harvey Pekar)... i almost bought a zombie comic, but this type always wins out

any time i have money now, i can't stop spending on discounted comics
but some of them are so amazing

like this one, VALKYRIE (no affiliation with tom cruise) which was published by ECLIPSE, and is no longer in print, so scoring them in their full 3 part, i was psyched - it's about an ex-nazi renegade pilot transported 40 years into the future, turned supermodel caught for her war crimes - the ones she did not commit... hilarious right.

the art is by PAUL GULACY and it's just funny because i was freaking out over how much i liked his drawings, so i went on his website and realized i actually was an unconscious fan already, buying an epic issue with a cover he did, and had come incredibly close to buying other comics he's worked on. i guess the reason i'm psyched about it, is because for the most part i stick to alternative comics in the fantagraphics kind of vein, slowly veering into vertigo, but lately have been getting really into comics i would've never seen myself picking up a year ago. i guess because when i look at most in the superhero/villainous/spy/adventure sort of vein (excluding many people of course) especially contemporary comics, they all just seem to look the same, the colour, the lines, the faces - but you don't get that with chester brown, clowes, bagge, etc. anyway i'm going to stop, because even this is starting to bore me just typing it.

i've started switching over to working in marker trying to finish up comics for TCAF, because they're so much quicker than using a fucking nib. and honestly, i can't tell THAT much of a difference once it's shrunk and scanned. can't decide whether to go to bed or keep drawing. i'm feeling mighty tired.
